Task 3.2

Task 3.2: Description of the river basins and identification of needs
Both pilot river basins (Sebou, Morocco, and Litani, Lebanon) wrote a report describing the main water management issues in each river basin. These reports are useful for guiding the selection of tools and methods that can help to improve the water management and the decisions taken by the water authorities/agencies. Based on the framework proposed by the WFD for the characterisation of river basins, this reports describe:

  • General features of the river basins – including a list of protected areas
  • Pressures on water resources (pollution, abstraction, flow regulation and morphology…)
  • The impact of these pressures on the state of the aquatic ecosystem – in terms of quantitative and qualitative, but also ecological status
  • Main environmental issues linked to water are identified
  • Areas where additional information and tools would be required to better understand the current situation and to support the choice of actions
  • Description of the institutional framework for water management as this helps understanding the possible demands in tools and decision support systems that would be discussed in the following steps of the SPI-Water project
